Houston Llew Spirit Tiles

Houston Llew (American) - From the beginning, Houston’s vision for his enameled artworks (Spiritiles) drew from the beauty of simplicity. He sought after an imagistic theme for his work rather than pursuing the abstract often seen in other enameled wall art. Finely ground colored glass is hand painted on copper and then fired in a kiln. The image is just the beginning - each piece is paired with a quote embedded around the sides to create an inspiring story through words as well as images in glass. Each tile represents a different theme: love, inspiration, celebrations, friends and family and fun! Spiritiles make wonderful gifts, they never fade or tarnish they are created to endure for generations to come. Share the unique story of life through Houston Llew Spiritile.

A southern boy born in Nashville, Houston attended school at Auburn University in Alabama then went to work at the seaport of Savannah. He moved along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico where he kept books and fished to keep his sanity. The old South captured his eye for icons; moss-draped ancient live oaks and weary shrimp boats hanging onto the sunset, but Houston Llew had not yet found the prima vitae he needed for his imagery.

Houston Llew started his venture inside a hot garage in Atlanta in the summer of 2008- at the depths of the worst recession since the Great Depression. While on his journey westward to Santa Fe, Houston Llew met the artist Zingaro, a master enamellist and heir to the revolutionary enameling techniques of Craig Ruwe and Fred Ball. Zingaro shared with Houston this precious gift - the luminous medium of glass fired to copper, vitreous enamel. This medium dates back over 3000 years. When Houston experienced his own creations embraced in its fire, he knew he'd come full circle - lost again in the world of art.

Spiritiles can hang on a wall or stand alone, each spiritile measuring 5 ¼” x 8 ½” x 1 ¾” they can be put together as a collage to make a visual statement.

Art Leaders Gallery is the only gallery in the West Bloomfield area to carry these beautiful art tiles.
