Antonio Velfín

Antonio Velfin was born and raised in Spain. He attended the University of San Carlos where studied fine arts and perfected his figurative painting.

While his current works are far from representational, the artist’s early imagery was exclusively classical. He eventually began to experiment with abstract imagery –incorporating avant garde colors and shapes within his classical compositions. The combination of Zen aesthetics with dramatic Baroque Tenebrism distinguished the artist as truly original.

Much of Velfin’s works depict classical figures imbued with artistic nostalgia and juxtaposed with instantaneous brushwork; however, in some of his latest paintings, the artist intentionally excludes the physical form altogether, simplifying his figures into abstraction. The result of this progression can be seen in his latest collection. These new compositions do not necessarily assume an entirely different identity, but rather –they allude to the prior figurative subject matter through their movement while simultaneously expressing an energy that transcends them. In summary, Velfin –by omitting the corporeal – alludes to something ephemeral or even ethereal within.
