Craig Alan (American, b. 1971) loves to tell the story of standing on his mother’s condo balcony and looking down to the beach, he was surprised to note that the people (ant-sized) were in the formation of lips, it was from that visual silhouette he created his famous Populous series. After working relentlessly on size and scale he was able to create the perfect design using people in various poses, which make up the larger image. He fashions people into many iconic images such as: Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and Audrey Hepburn. Now when Craig creates his originals, he does so by using his friends to format his picture. The contemporary artist views them from a second story while directing them in wide-ranging and abstract things such as: pushing strollers, carrying briefcases, strolling in wheelchairs, shaking hands and carrying umbrellas. Craig wants us to look into the image and find ourselves. It is truly art within art.
Born in 1971 in San Bernardino, California, Craig Alan was always considered to be the artistic type. It wasn’t until at a young age, Craig and his family uprooted to New Orleans that he began exploring his creativity, detailed visual interpretation and ingenuous impulses for art.
His early forms of experimentation took the form of street portraiture, leading to Craig perfecting his flair for replicating the human figure and afforded him a sense of economic autonomy. Craig continued to develop technically and conceptually through his own diligent studies, though a formal art education was his long-term plan.
It was during Craig’s sophomore year at the University of Mobile, Alabama, that Craig’s vigorous training in art began. Focusing on studio arts, Craig was almost immediately thrown into the limelight, earning the area award for academic excellence. “Art with a Southern Drawl” was the universities most prestigious exhibition; chosen from the field of over 16,000 entries, 42 pieces were submitted from Craig.
In addition to his studies in the arts, Craig received a minor in theater, adding various techniques in makeup and set design to his repertoire. This blending of disparate influences and media is visually apparent in all of Craig’s works, which demonstrate a broad knowledge and appreciation of the human form as well as the colorful world these beings occupy. Combining his skills into elaborate textures, hues and compositions including pop art, Craig’s artwork reveals a technical sophistication as well as an elaborate imagination.
Craig’s collections run the gamut from abstract expressionism to haunting, graphic realism, each one a reflection of its creator’s unique vision. Craig’s prolific career is a culmination of textbook artistic knowledge and keen aesthetic sense, one developed not through intensive schooling but deep within recesses of this artist’s brilliant mind.
With many solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States and numerous works in private collection across the globe, this internationally acclaimed artist has established himself as a singular voice in the visual arts industry and needs little expiation. Today, Craig Alan is mostly recognized for his contemporary works of art. His artwork can be found at select fine art galleries. Art Leaders Gallery is proud to be the exclusive gallery in Michigan for Craig Alan’s work.
