Nakisa Seika (Japanese, b. 1979) began working as a full time artist after graduating from college. Her artwork began to show the influence of her native country of Japan. She fine-tuned her skills as a calligraphy artist and, using the Chinese brush and other non-traditional tools, she embarked on a body of work, which she calls her Oriental Gardens collections. The flowers in her works are powerful, yet simple and impressive. Her skill with calligraphy and knowledge of the Sumi-E style creates just the right feel for the pieces. She combines her calligraphy skills with gold and silver leafing techniques to create original contemporary artwork, which has clean line but is still very powerful. Her colors are dramatic and intense. The addition of resin to her mixed media adds a reflective, almost glass-like quality that demands attention. Her works are bold and yet serene at the same time. Nakisa Seika was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1979. Her childhood was spent visiting museums and attending theatrical shows such as classical and modern ballet, musicals, opera, theatre and Kabuki. The drama and romance of these theatrical presentations left a lasting impression on Nakisa, which is evident in her current artwork.
At only 15 years of age, Nakisa Seika knew she wanted to travel abroad to pursue an art education in the United States. She made arrangements and accomplished her goal, arriving in the United States by the age of 17 where she finished high school in upstate New York. After spending three years in New York, Nakisa enrolled at the Atlanta College of Art and majored in painting. It was here that she also studied and explored the craft of sculpture, silkscreen printing and lithography.
"We believe eight million spirits live within us," Nakisa says, "Nature is hiding a lot of them. In Japan, we feel closer to nature. It is a part of us."
And yet as all gifted artists, Nakisa does not believe her work will ever be complete. She refuses to suppress ingenuity for any reason whatsoever. "I'm sure I will not be satisfied with my work until the day I die," Nakisa says. "I am always refining my style, always improving."
Nakisa’s works are represented in numerous select fine art galleries and collections worldwide. Seika is represented exclusively at Art Leaders Gallery in Michigan.
