Louis Icart Artist Biography

Louis Icart was born in 1880 to a modest family in Toulouse, France. He explored art and drawing at an early age, and became particularly interested in fashion due to its radical change at the turn of the century. He didn’t begin seriously concentrating on painting, drawing, and the production of etchings until after he returned from World War I where he sketched on every surface available to him in order to soothe anguish of war. His etchings became so popular that he would often create separate European and American editions of his piece to satisfy the demand of his work. Icart reached the pinnacle of his career during the era of Art Deco. While sleek lines and bold colors were were the rage during this time, he managed to become very successful with his own style, one derived from eighteenth-century French masters and the Impressionists. Icart met a young blond woman in 1819, Miss Fanny Volmers, who would go on to become his wife and inspiration for many of his future pieces.
