Frederick Hart (American, 1943 – 1999) Bronze, Stone, & Acrylic Lucite Master Sculptor

Hart was undeniably a master sculptor able to create beautiful figurative sculpture out of cast marble, bronze, and acrylic. His work is both realistic and cerebral with a strong sense of sensuality and religion. The clear acrylic Lucite sculptures are especially interesting in the way they can be viewed from any angle as they gracefully reflect and capture the light. All of his pieces are very detailed, figurative and, spiritual, reminiscent of the works by old Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo and Bernini.

Frederick Hart was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1943. His mother died only two years after his birth and his father remarried soon after. When he was thirteen years old, the family relocated to Virginia, near Washington D.C., where he ended up failing the ninth grade. He was sent to South Carolina to live with his aunt and repeat the year of school, but when he received a near-perfect score, the principal helped the now sixteen year-old Hart to apply and gain admission to the University of South Carolina in 1959. Seven years later his sister was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away the next year. It was then, during his period of grieving, that he “stumbled into a sculpture class at the Corcoran School of Art and was blown away.”

In 1975, Hart won the opportunity to create the west façade for the Washington National Cathedral. It was there that he spent the next ten years sculpting the story of creation for the world’s sixth largest Gothic cathedral. From there he created such iconic pieces as Three Soldiers for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and The Cross of the Millennium, which was presented to Pope John Paul II in a private ceremony at the Vatican in Rome. Hart was once quoted saying: “Art must touch our lives, our fears and cares—evoke our dreams and give hope to the darkness.”

Frederick Hart’s sculptures are collected worldwide by major galleries, museums, and private collectors. Truly innovative and masterful, his pieces are highly sought after and cherished. Art Leaders Gallery is proud to be the exclusive representative for the Frederick Hart Collection in the Michigan area.
