Nicholas Stelter (American)

Kiln-Fired Sheet Glass Sculpture Artist

Beginning Nicholas Stelter’s journey as a kiln formed glass sculptor, in the early 2000’s.  He started working with a nationally recognized glass artist who specialized in stained glass restorations and kiln formed glass.  During this time, he also explored working with stone and the possibilities of concrete casting.  Recently, Stelter set up his own studio where he is thrilled to create new pieces of glass art where he enjoys seeing an idea come to life.  While his pieces have a similar shape, no two pieces have the same pattern, making every piece unique.

Stelter’s inspiration to make glass began at an early age.  Stelter spent his summer days at his Grandfather’s woodworking shop where he was able to pay close attention to the beginning of his glass career.  Stelter’s grandfather was a skilled engraver who focused his artwork on details, and built his skills by using diverse tools and different techniques.  Not only did his grandfather work as an artist, but his mother was a ceramicist as well.  With these influences in his life, Stelter developed an eye for art and a passion to work with his hands.

Today, Stelter sculpts glass within the kiln, always pushing and exploring the glass and letting it show him its true form.  Following that, the glass is cold worked and polished to create the soothing shapes and organic lines that are indicative of my work. Then, he designs and fabricates complementary pedestals to finish each piece.  I find the exploration of the purity of shape and simplicity in form create surprisingly complex pieces that mimic the unpredictability of nature.

Each Piece is uniquely different for the ripples in the glass illuminate color and bend light which creates an intense energy.  Looking closely at each sculpture, one sees the waves and currents that create stunning patterns on their surfaces beneath.  These glass vessels uniquely bend and capture light to create a dynamic array of color and beauty.
