What are the elements of Conservation Framing?
In addition to complementing your piece of artwork, the frame should also be proportionate to the size and weight of the piece being framed while also providing enough depth to allow for air circulation or any necessary reinforcements within the frame.
A glazing that filters out harmful UV rays is necessary for conservation framing. The highest quality acrylic or glass will shield your art from 97% of damaging UV light. All UV coated materials are also available with anti-reflective coatings to reduce glare and provide amazing clarity for the viewer. Museum quality anti-reflection picture framing glass with Conservation Grade UV Protection is the best glazing option available for art, photographs, and other important personal keepsakes. Along with its nearly invisible finish, it effectively blocks up to 99% of harmful indoor and outdoor UV light rays so that framed pieces remain clearer and brighter for longer.
Matting and Backing
100% acid free cotton rag mat board with no artificial pigment is the traditional and historically proven choice for conservation matting and backing. Alkaline buffered wood pulp based boards are a new innovation. These boards are made with zeolites, or Micro-Chamber technology. Zeolites are molecular sieves that trap acids present in the environment and lock them away from the art. Acid-free foam board should be used as backing to support the piece being framed.
Hinging the Art
Hinging is the process of attaching the artwork to the matting. The hinges are tailored to each piece based on the weight and substrate of the artwork. Hinges should be made of acid-free Japanese rice paper and attached to the art with a wheat paste. In general two hinges in the upper corners are adequate to support the piece while allowing for natural movement with changes in the atmosphere. The weight of the hinge should be slightly less than the weight of the paper. This ensures that with any stress (movement during shipping, for example) will cause the hinge to give rather than the art to tear. All hinging must be able to be reversed at a later date and not cause discoloration with age. Acid-free clear pockets can also be used in all four corners of the artwork to hold the piece in place.
Stretching Canvas and Framing Canvas
Special stretcher bars are designed for stretching canvas. The bar has a raised outer edge to keep the canvas away from the inner lip of the bar. The bar also needs to be braced depending on the size for inner support. The lip of the frame is called the rabbet and should always be lined with Volara Foam Rabbet Tape to prevent the canvas from sticking to the wood lip of the frame.
When should I ask for Conservation Framing?
Original paintings, limited edition artwork, and items that are valuable, historical, or collectible will require conservation framing. Anything you would like preserved for the enjoyment of future generations is a candidate for museum conservation framing as an important form of insurance in keeping works in the same mint condition. The cost premium for conservation framing is marginal and certainly well worth it; our framing designers and fine art framer will advise you when conservation framing is necessary.
